Blue Lotus Designs: Featuring the work of Nina Maniscalco

This new series of painted furniture and things incorporates three new color patterns. The "Red Seed Pod" pattern was inspired by a Persian rug, the "Peacock Island" pattern was inspired by an Indian Miniature Painting, and the "Dream Blue lake" pattern was inspired by a dream of flying over a lake.

In each of these series of works, I started by creating a painted sketch, testing out color ideas and patterns, then I applied a similar painted treatment to the object. The sketch was only the beginning, as each piece of furniture had it's own unique shape and surface area. I spent a lot of
time figuring out how to apply the colors and patterns to each distinct area.

For First Friday Gallery Night on August 6, the Community School of Music and Arts will host an open studio demonstration with abstract painter Roberta Dixon in the school's Art Studio, from 5-8 pm.

Dixon's solo exhibit, Escape Artist and Other Allusions, currently occupies CSMA's Legacy Foundation Gallery (on view weekdays through August 27.) On Friday, August 6, she invites gallery goers to come watch her create a new painting, expressing elements of spontaneity and exuberance. The resulting work will join the exhibition and be raffled off to benefit CSMA. The raffle drawing will take place August 20.

Dixon-who describes herself as "an abstract artist with an addiction to vibrant color"-is currently working with proportional symmetry and interconnectivity in her paintings. A transplant from the New York City area, Dixon took up painting in 2003 when she decided to work with a "particular shade of cerulean blue" that had occupied her thoughts for 25 yearsLearn more about the artist at www.rdixonart.com.

H. Peter Kahn (1921-1997) is fondly remembered by generations of Cornell students and Ithacans as a man whose life was dedicated to art, especially the arts of fine printing and the handmade book. A prolific typographer, illustrator and book designer as well as a painter, the German-born artist was a member of the Cornell community for forty years. The Sky's the Limit Carol Abitabilo Ast                                                                          GalleryNight/8.6SOAG.JPG

An exhibition of paintings in pastel by Carol Abitabilo Ast will be at the gallery August 4-29. A reception for the artist will be held Friday, August 6 from 5-8pm. Abitabilo Ast says, "I paint landscapes because the land has always had an attraction for me. I believe that nature and beauty are valuable components of human existence and landscape has it all. My preferred place to work is on site but often photographs are necessary to use in the studio when light conditions are too fleeting."

The artist periodically conducts pastel landscape workshops in New Mexico, New York and Maine and much of the work in this show represents those places. Gallery hours are 12-6, Wed. - Fri. and 12-5, Sat. and Sun. State of the Art is located at 120 W. State Street. There is curbside parking and the gallery is ADA accessible.
